Jeanes Hospital Opens New Comprehensive Spine Center
Tuesday, September 02, 2008

Philadelphia – Temple University Health System today announced the opening of The Temple Spine Center at Jeanes on the campus of Jeanes Hospital, offering patients a complete range of non-surgical and surgical services for the diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders.

Over the past decade, the number of Americans with impaired function due to back or neck problems has been on the rise, according to the American Medical Association. “This increase has created a need for specialized, multidisciplinary spine care,” said F. Todd Wetzel, MD, Director of the new Spine Center.

“Our philosophy reflects a comprehensive approach to spine care,” Wetzel said. “Many spine problems can be managed successfully without surgery, which is why we are equipped to provide a wide variety of non-surgical or pre-surgical options. These include pain management, physical therapy, and short- and long-term rehabilitation care.”

Specialists can also help patients work through self-care and lifestyle management issues that affect their spine problems, such as exercise, proper use of medication, and weight control.

“The goal is to return patients to their daily routines and a satisfactory quality of life,” said Wetzel.

For patients who do require surgery, the Spine Center is staffed and equipped to provide a full range of surgical services, including spinal fusion, artificial disc replacement, and innovative procedures such as microdiscectomy and X-Stop surgery to alleviate sciatica.

“The Temple Spine Center at Jeanes represents the next step in the evolution of Jeanes Hospital as we begin offering a wider range of specialty services – including stroke care and expanded vascular and bariatric surgery programs,” said Linda Grass, CEO of Jeanes Hospital.

Stroke Center at Jeanes Hospital Awarded Certification from The Joint Commission
Monday, March 31, 2008

(Philadelphia, PA) – Jeanes Hospital has earned the Gold Seal of Approval™ from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers – which signifies that the services provided by Jeanes’ Stroke Center have the critical elements necessary to improve outcomes for stroke patients.

“We are honored and proud to be certified by The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center,” said Linda Grass, President & CEO of Jeanes Hospital.   “This prestigious designation acknowledges the ability of our Stroke Center team to meet or exceed performance measures that improve outcomes for stroke patients.”

The Joint Commission’s Primary Stroke Center Certification is based on the recommendations for stroke centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association’s statements/guidelines for stroke care.   For example, certified stroke centers must demonstrate their ability to deploy rapid-response stroke treatment teams; use comprehensive, written stroke-care protocols; and maintain an integrated system for managing stroke patients.

The Stroke Center at Jeanes treats about 175 to 200 patients each year.  Led by neurologist Marcia Halpern, MD, it offers comprehensive, state-of-the-art care for people who have had a stroke, or brain attack.  “We have built a strong multidisciplinary team that can efficiently diagnose and treat patients who have experienced a stroke – anything from a mild ischemic event to a major brain attack,” said Halpern. “By effectively implementing clinical practice guidelines, we are able to provide immediate treatment, as well as extensive rehabilitation care.”

Last year, the Stroke Center at Jeanes Hospital earned a Silver Award from the American Stroke Association for having met, for 24 consecutive months, all performance measures associated with improving outcomes for stroke patients.
